A physician by training, he became one of the most devoted chroniclers of northern Bohemia, turning local history, travel writing, and regional culture into a lifelong body of work. His books and guides helped preserve the landscapes and stories of the Česká Lípa region for later generations.

About the author

Born on October 4, 1844, in Kottowitz in the Austrian Empire and later dying in Vienna on February 23, 1940, Franz Hantschel was a German-Bohemian doctor, regional historian, and writer. He studied medicine at the Josephinum in Vienna, earned his medical degree in 1870, and served in military medical posts in places including Lemberg, Stockerau, Vienna, Znaim, and Brno.

From 1879 onward he practiced medicine in Česká Lípa while increasingly dedicating himself to local history and writing. He became a leading figure in the Nordböhmischer Exkursions-Klub and edited its journal, helping document the history, geography, and cultural life of northern Bohemia.

His publications ranged from local studies and poetry to travel guides and broader regional works. Among the titles associated with him are Dichtungen aus Nordböhmen, Nordböhmischer Touristen-Führer, and Heimatkunde des politischen Bezirkes Böhmisch Leipa. The museum in Česká Lípa has preserved the memory of his research and collecting work.
