by Frans Bastiaanse
Born in Utrecht on May 14, 1868, and later dying in Amsterdam on June 12, 1947, Frans Bastiaanse was a Dutch poet whose full name was Wilhelm Ange François Bastiaanse. He studied in Utrecht and spent many years teaching Dutch in Hilversum.
He is chiefly remembered for carefully crafted nature and love poetry, often described as impressionistic in style. His verse is linked to the generation that followed the writers of De Nieuwe Gids, and he became known for its atmosphere, musicality, and refined emotion.
Among the works associated with him are Natuur en leven (1900), Gedichten (1909), and Een zomerdroom (1919). For listeners coming to him now, Bastiaanse offers a quieter kind of poetry: attentive to beauty, mood, and passing feeling.
