A Dutch poet remembered for finely crafted nature and love lyrics, he wrote with an impressionist touch that gives his verse a light, reflective feel. His work moves between everyday life, seasons, memory, and emotion.

by Frans Bastiaanse
Born in Utrecht on May 14, 1868, Wilhelm Ange François Bastiaanse became known as Frans Bastiaanse, a Dutch poet whose work is closely associated with impressionistic nature and love poetry. He studied in Utrecht and later spent many years teaching Dutch in Hilversum.
He built his reputation on carefully shaped lyric poems, and reference sources repeatedly note his gift for evocative, polished verse. Among the books linked with his career are Natuur en leven (1900), Gedichten (1909), and Een zomerdroom (1919), which help show the lasting themes in his writing: the natural world, feeling, and quiet reflection.
Bastiaanse died in Amsterdam on June 12, 1947. Though not as widely known today as some of his contemporaries, he remains of interest to readers of Dutch poetry for the musical, attentive way he captured mood and landscape.
