Born in Hanover in 1864 as Benjamin Franklin Wedekind, he spent much of his youth in Switzerland and later worked in journalism, cabaret, and the theater. That mix of literary ambition and stage experience gave his writing an unusual energy: his plays were meant not just to be read, but to provoke.
Wedekind became famous for dramas that attacked hypocrisy, especially around sex, respectability, and authority. Spring Awakening explored the fears and confusion of adolescence with a frankness that shocked many readers and audiences, while his Lulu plays created one of modern theater’s most memorable and controversial figures.
He was also an actor and performer, and his bold, episodic style influenced later developments in Expressionism, epic theater, and other forms of modern drama. Although many of his works were censored or scandalous in their own time, they have lasted because they still feel lively, risky, and surprisingly direct.
