About the author

Frank Stevens (1868–1949) was an archaeologist and curator who served as director of Salisbury Museum, then known as the Salisbury and South Wiltshire Museum. He was closely involved with the museum’s collections and with the study and interpretation of prehistoric sites in Wiltshire.

His best-known book, Stonehenge Today and Yesterday, first appeared in 1916 and was published in revised editions for many years. Written in an accessible style, it presented the monument’s history and archaeological evidence for visitors with an intelligent interest in Stonehenge. Stevens also wrote The Salisbury Museums, 1861–1947: A Record of Eighty-Six Years’ Progress.
