About the author

Born in London in 1864, Frank H. Vizetelly was an English-American lexicographer, etymologist, and editor who built his career around the history and proper use of language. He moved to the United States in 1891 and became closely associated with the publishing house of Funk & Wagnalls, where he worked on major reference projects.

Vizetelly is especially remembered for his work on A Standard Dictionary of the English Language and later editorial work on dictionaries and encyclopedias. He also wrote about usage and style for general readers, including A Desk-Book of Errors in English, reflecting his gift for explaining language clearly and practically.

Coming from the notable Vizetelly publishing family, he spent much of his life in the world of books, printing, and journalism. He died in 1938, leaving behind a body of work that speaks to anyone who enjoys words, reference books, and the craft of careful editing.
