About the author

Born in 1889, Frank H. Cheley was an American writer and camp leader whose name is closely tied to the early outdoor education movement. Reliable catalog records and digitized editions show that he published Told by the Camp Fire and a range of other books, including Camp-Fire Yarns, The Job of Being a Dad, Dad, Whose Boy Is Yours?, and Little Leads to Leadership.

He also founded Cheley Colorado Camps in 1921. The camp's own history says his goal was to give boys time away from the city in a beautiful natural setting, where they could learn outdoor skills and grow through close contact with nature.

That mix of storytelling, camping, and character-building runs through the work connected with his name. Even now, his books suggest an author who cared as much about the values learned around a campfire as the adventures themselves.
