Born in Mansfield, Ohio, on May 8, 1855, Frank G. Carpenter became known as an author, photographer, lecturer, and collector of photographs. He wrote geography textbooks as well as the widely read Carpenter's World Travels series, which was especially popular in the early 20th century.

Carpenter built his reputation by traveling extensively and writing about what he saw in a clear, accessible way. His work aimed to bring everyday life, landscapes, and cultures from around the world to readers who might never leave home, combining practical information with the energy of firsthand observation.

He died in Nanking on June 18, 1924. Today, he is remembered as one of the best-known American travel writers of his era, with books that captured both curiosity about the wider world and the educational spirit of their time.
