About the author

Born in Mansfield, Ohio, in 1855, Frank G. Carpenter built a career as a journalist, lecturer, photographer, and travel writer. After graduating from the University of Wooster, he worked in newspaper journalism and later became widely known for writing about countries and cultures around the world in a clear, accessible style.

He is best remembered for his geography books and the long-running Carpenter's World Travels series, which introduced many American readers to everyday life in places they would never see firsthand. Libraries and archival collections also note the large body of photographs connected with his travels, reflecting how important images were to his work as a reporter and educator.
