About the author

Born in Clinton, New York, on June 20, 1826, Frank Field Ellinwood studied at Hamilton College and later at Auburn and Princeton theological seminaries. He was ordained in 1853 and first served pastorates in Belvidere, New Jersey, and Rochester, New York.

After his years in the pulpit, he became deeply involved in Presbyterian church leadership. He served as secretary of the Church Erection Committee and later spent many years as corresponding secretary of the Board of Foreign Missions, work that linked his name closely with the missionary movement of his era.

Ellinwood also wrote extensively. His books include Oriental Religions and Christianity and works on missions and church history, reflecting a strong interest in how Christianity met the wider religious world. He died on September 30, 1908, in Cornwall, Connecticut.
