About the author

Born in 1849, Frank Cowper was an English yachtsman and author remembered especially for his role in popularizing single-handed cruising. He wrote both fiction and nonfiction, and his sailing books drew directly on real experience at sea, making them useful to practical sailors as well as enjoyable for general readers.

Cowper also wrote novels and historical tales, including stories connected with the Isle of Wight. His name appears alongside that of his wife, the author E. E. Cowper, who described him as a yachtsman already known for solo cruising and for books on sailing and fiction when they married in 1877.

He died in 1930. Today, he is chiefly remembered for combining adventurous seamanship with clear, accessible writing that brought small-boat sailing to life for a wide audience.
