by Frank Cowper
Born in London on 18 January 1849, Frank Cowper was an English yachtsman, explorer, author, illustrator, artist, and journalist. He studied at Queen's College, Oxford, earning a B.A. in 1871 and an M.A. in 1875, and became especially well known for sailing alone in small craft at a time when that kind of cruising was still unusual.
His reputation rests largely on a series of Sailing Tours books, based on voyages around the British Isles and through European waterways. These accounts helped popularize single-handed cruising, and later writers have credited him as an important early influence on modern recreational sailing.
Cowper was more than a sailing writer. He also published adventure, romance, and historical fiction, and he illustrated his own books as well. He died on 28 May 1930, leaving behind a body of work that mixes travel, seamanship, and storytelling in a way that still feels distinctive.
