About the author

Born on July 12, 1879, near Atlantic, Iowa, Frank C. Pellett grew up on a farm and later studied in local schools. After reading law and being admitted to the Missouri bar, he spent a few years in Missouri before returning to Iowa, where his interests in farming, wildlife, and honey plants shaped the rest of his career.

Pellett became a well-known figure in American beekeeping. Sources describe him as Iowa's state apiarist in the 1910s, and his books include American Honey Plants, Productive Bee-Keeping, Practical Queen Rearing, and History of American Beekeeping. He was also associated with American Bee Journal, which helped spread his practical advice to working beekeepers.

He was more than a bee expert: contemporary and archival sources also remember him as a naturalist and horticulturist. A woodland preserve in Cass County, Iowa, now bears his name, reflecting his long interest in native plants and conservation. He died on April 28, 1951, in Atlantic, Iowa.
