About the author

Born in New Bedford, Massachusetts, in 1875, Frank Bertram Wade trained in science and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Wesleyan University, with honors in chemistry. He later built his career as an educator, and his books reflect the clear, instructional style of someone used to explaining complex subjects simply.

Wade is best known for writing A Text-Book of Precious Stones for Jewelers and the Gem-Loving Public and Diamonds: A Study of the Factors that Govern Their Value. In the preface to A Text-Book of Precious Stones, he describes bringing together his professional knowledge as a chemistry teacher with his personal study of gems, which helps explain the book’s mix of scientific detail and practical advice.

He spent much of his working life in Indianapolis and was associated with high-school chemistry teaching there. Wade died in 1950, leaving behind works that connect classroom science with the everyday fascination of gemstones and jewelry.
