Born in Coldwater, Michigan, Frank Benton built his career around the study of bees and the improvement of beekeeping. He trained at Michigan State Agricultural College and continued his studies in the United States and Europe, bringing a broad, international perspective to a field that was still developing rapidly.
He became especially known for his work as an entomologist and apicultural expert, including his efforts to introduce and study useful bee strains from abroad. He also invented the Benton cage, a queen-shipping cage that became an important practical tool for beekeepers.
As an author, Benton wrote in a hands-on, instructional way that reflected his scientific background and field experience. His books and manuals helped make beekeeping knowledge more accessible, which is one reason his work still draws interest today.
