About the author
Born in Omagh, County Tyrone, in 1874, Francis McCullagh grew up in a publican’s family and was educated at the CBS in Omagh and St Columb’s College in Derry. He went on to become an Irish journalist, war correspondent, and author whose career carried him far beyond Ireland.
McCullagh built his reputation by reporting from major international flashpoints. Sources describe him as a widely traveled foreign correspondent who covered wars and upheavals across Europe, North Africa, and revolutionary Russia, bringing a reporter’s eye for danger and drama to his writing.
He also wrote books shaped by those experiences, including works on Bolshevism and the persecution of Christianity in Soviet Russia. He died in 1956, but his work still offers a vivid window into the age of roaming correspondents who witnessed history at close range.
