About the author

Born in Boston on March 3, 1825, Francis Jewett Parker spent much of his life closely involved with the city and the state of Massachusetts. A contemporary memoir published in 1909 says he served Boston in its Common Council in 1856, in the Massachusetts Senate in 1858, and as a representative to the General Court in 1861.

Parker is also remembered for his Civil War service and for the books he left behind. He wrote The Story of the Thirty-second Regiment, Massachusetts Infantry and A Study of Municipal Government in Massachusetts, and he also compiled Genealogy of the Ainsworth Families in America, showing the range of his interests from military and civic history to family research.

He died in Boston on January 20, 1909. The surviving record suggests a writer deeply engaged with public life, and his books still have value for readers interested in New England history, the Civil War, and genealogy.
