About the author

Born on 17 February 1850 and educated at King Edward’s Grammar School in London and at Lincoln College, Oxford, Francis Bond became known as an English schoolmaster and architectural historian. He wrote with unusual clarity about medieval buildings, especially English churches, and built a reputation for making complex architectural history easier to follow.

Bond is best remembered for his work on English Gothic architecture and for a long series of books on church features such as screens, fonts, roofs, and woodwork. Works including English Cathedrals Illustrated, Gothic Architecture in England, and An Introduction to English Church Architecture helped establish him as an important guide to the form and development of English religious architecture.

He died on 3 February 1918. Although written more than a century ago, his studies remained influential because they combined close observation with a broad view of how churches were designed and changed over time.
