About the author

Born in Sicily in 1818, Francesco Crispi became deeply involved in the nationalist and revolutionary movements that shaped 19th-century Italy. He took part in the Sicilian revolution of 1848, spent years in exile, and later joined the struggle for Italian unification, building a reputation as an energetic and determined political leader.

After unification, he became one of the most prominent figures in Italian public life. Crispi served as prime minister and was known for his forceful style, his efforts to strengthen the state, and his major role in shaping national policy during a decisive period in Italy's early history.

His legacy remains mixed. He was admired by some for his patriotism and political drive, but criticized by others for his authoritarian methods and for the colonial policies that ended in Italy's defeat at Adwa in 1896. He died in 1901, leaving behind a career that still sparks debate.
