About the author

Born in Ribera, Sicily, on October 4, 1818, Francesco Crispi trained as a lawyer and became involved early in revolutionary politics. He took part in the upheavals of 1848, spent years in exile, and emerged as a committed supporter of Italian unity, closely linked with the wider nationalist movement of the Risorgimento.

Crispi later moved from radical activism into high office in the new Italian state. He served as prime minister twice, from 1887 to 1891 and again from 1893 to 1896, and was known for his forceful, energetic style. His governments pushed for a stronger central state and a more assertive foreign policy, helping make him one of the most prominent political figures in late 19th-century Italy.

His legacy is complicated. He was admired by some as a patriot and nation-builder, but his reputation was also damaged by authoritarian methods at home and by the disastrous Italian defeat at Adwa in 1896 during colonial expansion in East Africa. He died in Naples on August 11, 1901, leaving behind a life that mirrors both the hopes and the tensions of unified Italy.
