About the author

Born in Granollers in 1840 and died in Bigues i Riells in 1901, Francesc de Sales Maspons i Labrós was a Catalan folklorist who also built a distinguished career in law and notarial work. He earned degrees in law in Barcelona and later became dean of the notarial college of Barcelona.

Alongside that professional life, he became an important figure in the Catalan cultural revival of the 19th century. He chaired the Associació d'Excursions Catalana and later presided over the Jocs Florals de Barcelona in 1897, showing how closely he was involved with the literary and cultural life of his time.

He is especially remembered for collecting and publishing Catalan folk tales, legends, and popular traditions. That work helped bring oral storytelling into print and gave later readers a lasting record of stories that might otherwise have disappeared.
