About the author

Born in Cumbria in 1886, Frances Hatton Eva Hasell was a British traveler, writer, and missionary who became known for her work in western Canada. She ran the Canadian Caravan Mission, an effort that used mobile outreach to bring religious education and support to scattered prairie communities.

She is best remembered as the co-author of Across the Prairie in a Motor Caravan (1922), a lively account of a 3,000-mile journey by two Englishwomen traveling on behalf of religious education. The book stands out not just as a travel memoir, but as a window into the everyday realities of the Canadian West in the early twentieth century.

Hasell was appointed MBE for her work, and her life later drew enough interest to become the subject of historical study, including Missionary on Wheels: Frances Hatton Eva Hasell and the Caravan Mission. She died in 1974, leaving behind a story that blends endurance, faith, and a real taste for the open road.
