About the author

Born Frances Emily Nesbitt in Wolverhampton in 1863, she became known as a watercolor painter as well as a writer. She studied at the Slade School of Art and exhibited widely, including with the Royal Academy, the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, and the Society of Women Artists.

Nesbitt is especially remembered by readers today for Algeria and Tunis (1906), a travel book shaped by close visual attention and on-the-ground detail. The book was illustrated by the author, which fits the larger picture of her career: she was an artist who wrote, and a writer who looked at the world like an artist.

She died in 1934. Even from the small amount of biographical record now easily available, her work stands out for its mix of careful observation, atmosphere, and a strong sense of place.
