About the author

Born in Norfolk in 1849, she was the daughter of Bishop John William Colenso and spent important years in southern Africa, where her family became deeply involved in public life. That experience shaped her understanding of colonial politics and the Zulu kingdom, and it gave her unusual closeness to the events she later described in print.

She is best remembered for History of the Zulu War and Its Origin (1880), a major account of the war, and for later works including The Ruin of Zululand (1884). Her books combined historical narrative with outspoken criticism of British policy, and they helped preserve perspectives that might otherwise have been pushed aside.

Colenso died in 1887 at just 37 years old. Though her life was short, her work remains valuable to readers interested in the Anglo-Zulu War, imperial history, and nineteenth-century political writing.
