About the author

Born in Indiana in 1889, Frances Cavanah graduated from DePauw University and went on to build a career in children's publishing. She worked on the staff of Child Life magazine for about fifteen years, then served as a biography editor for an encyclopedia and later directed biography publishing for a textbook company.

Alongside her editorial work, she wrote books for young readers, especially biographies and historical works. That background gave her writing a practical, readable style aimed at making real lives and events interesting and accessible.

Cavanah died in 1982. Though not widely known today, she was part of the generation of editors and writers who helped shape nonfiction reading for children in the twentieth century.
