About the author

Born Helene Butenschön in Löbejün on September 10, 1874, she grew up in Bernburg (Saale) and later became known by the pseudonym Fr. Lehne. She attended a higher girls’ school until 1891 and had hoped to become a teacher, but poor health kept her from following that path.

Instead, she turned to writing and went on to publish a large body of fiction, becoming a successful German popular author. Her novels include Fräulein Doktor, a story about a young woman fighting to study medicine at a time when that ambition was still controversial.

Butenschön died in Munich on November 18, 1957. Though not widely known today outside specialist and library circles, her work offers a vivid glimpse into German popular literature and women’s aspirations in the first half of the 20th century.
