An artist turned spiritual teacher, she wrote in a warm, practical voice about faith, intuition, and the power of words. Her best-known books helped make New Thought ideas accessible to everyday readers.

by Florence Scovel Shinn
Born in Camden, New Jersey, on September 24, 1871, Florence Scovel Shinn studied art at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. She first built a career as an artist and illustrator and was part of the creative world around her husband, painter Everett Shinn, before her work moved in a different direction.
In her middle years, she became known as a New Thought teacher and metaphysical writer. Her most famous book, The Game of Life and How to Play It (1925), presented spiritual ideas in a direct, conversational style, using short stories and memorable sayings rather than dense theory.
Shinn's books stayed popular long after her death on October 17, 1940. Readers still return to her for her upbeat, practical approach to belief, spoken affirmations, and everyday courage.
