About the author

Born in Tus in northeastern Iran, Firdawsi (also commonly spelled Ferdowsi) lived around 940 to 1020 CE and is celebrated as one of the greatest poets in Persian literature. He is most famous for the Shahnameh (Book of Kings), a vast epic poem that recounts the myths, heroes, and royal history of pre-Islamic Iran.

He spent many years composing the Shahnameh, creating a work that became central to Persian cultural memory. The poem is admired not only for its storytelling and memorable heroes, but also for its role in strengthening and preserving the Persian language.

Because he lived so long ago, many details of his life come through later tradition as much as firm historical record. Even so, his legacy is unmistakable: Firdawsi’s poetry has inspired readers, writers, and artists for generations, and his Shahnameh remains a cornerstone of world literature.
