About the author

Born in Vienna in 1833, Ferdinand von Saar became one of the notable Austrian writers of the later 19th century. He worked across several forms—novels, plays, novellas, and poetry—and is especially remembered for his contribution to Austrian realism.

His writing is often described as elegiac and pessimistic, with a strong sense of memory, social change, and lives that do not unfold as hoped. Critics and reference works regularly single out his novellas as the most enduring part of his work.

Saar died in Döbling, near Vienna, in 1906. Although not as widely read in English as some of his contemporaries, he is still recognized as an important figure in Austrian literature.
