About the author

Born in Vienna in 1793, Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller studied at the Academy of Fine Arts there and went on to become one of the most important Austrian painters of the Biedermeier period. He worked across portraiture, genre painting, and landscape, and he was especially admired for the sharp observation and natural light in his pictures.

Waldmüller believed painting should be grounded in direct study of the visible world. That belief shaped both his art and his teaching, and it also made him a forceful, sometimes controversial figure in the art world of his time. Alongside portraits and domestic scenes, he painted many landscapes inspired by Austria and by travels to Italy.

He died in 1865 in Hinterbrühl, near Vienna. Today he is remembered not only for his technical skill, but for the clarity and warmth with which he captured 19th-century life.
