About the author

Born in Vienna in 1793, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts and built a career as one of Austria’s most important painters of the Biedermeier period. He worked across portraiture, landscape, and genre painting, and became especially admired for the careful observation and natural light that give his pictures such immediacy.

Waldmüller also taught and wrote about art, arguing for close study of nature rather than rigid academic formulas. That independent streak brought him into conflict with parts of the art establishment, but it also helped define the freshness and directness of his painting.

He died in 1865, leaving behind a body of work that remains central to Austrian art history. Today he is remembered both for technical skill and for the lively, often deeply human attention he gave to ordinary people and places.
