About the author

Born in Amsterdam in 1846, Ferdinand Domela Nieuwenhuis began his public life as a Lutheran minister before moving into socialist politics. He became a powerful speaker and writer, founded the newspaper Recht voor Allen, and was widely known for defending workers and challenging established authority.

Over time, he grew disillusioned with parliamentary politics and moved toward anarchism, becoming an important anti-militarist and free-thought advocate. His influence reached far beyond party politics: for many supporters, he symbolized moral courage and resistance to social injustice.

He died in 1919, but he remains a striking figure in Dutch political history because his career traced a dramatic path from the pulpit to the radical left, always driven by a strong sense of justice.
