About the author

Born in Amsterdam on 31 December 1846, Ferdinand Domela Nieuwenhuis began his public life as a Lutheran minister. After losing his religious faith, he turned his energy toward politics and social reform, becoming the first major socialist leader in the Netherlands.

He was known for his powerful speaking and his commitment to ordinary workers, especially in a period when socialist ideas were still new and controversial. Later in life, he broke with parliamentary socialism and became a social anarchist and anti-militarist, arguing that real change demanded more than elections alone.

Nieuwenhuis died on 18 November 1919 in Hilversum. More than a century later, he is still remembered as a striking and influential figure in Dutch radical history: a man who kept challenging authority, whether religious, political, or military.
