About the author

Born in 1885 near Moorhead, Minnesota, Ferdinand Cole Lane grew up largely on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. He studied at Tabor Academy and later attended both Boston University and MIT before building a varied career in research, writing, and editing. He died in 1984.

Lane wrote accessible nonfiction that invited readers into the natural world. Boston University's archival records list manuscripts and published works including The Mysterious Sea, The Earth's Grandest Rivers, The World's Great Lakes, The Story of Mountains, The Story of Trees, and later children's titles in Random House's "All About" series, such as books on the sea, insects, and flowers.

He also had an unusual second life in baseball journalism. Sources from the Society for American Baseball Research describe F. C. Lane as an editor and prolific writer for Baseball Magazine, showing how comfortably he moved between science, popular education, and sports writing.
