About the author

Born in Saint-Félix, Savoy, in 1802, Félix Dupanloup became a Roman Catholic priest and later served as Bishop of Orléans from 1849 until his death in 1878. He first gained notice in Paris for his gift as a teacher and catechist, especially through popular religious instruction for young people.

Dupanloup is often remembered as one of the leading voices of Liberal Catholicism in France. He supported a larger place for the Church in education and took part in major public debates about religion, schooling, and politics in the mid-19th century. Alongside his church work, he was also a prolific writer whose books and addresses helped shape his public reputation.

His career joined pastoral work with public influence: he was known as an orator, an educator, and a churchman willing to engage with the issues of his day. For listeners coming to him now, he offers a window into the religious and intellectual life of modern France in a period of deep change.
