About the author

Born in 1103, Yue Fei lived during the Southern Song period and rose from modest beginnings to become one of the dynasty’s best-known military commanders. He is especially remembered for fighting the Jin dynasty during a time when northern China had been lost and the Song court was under intense pressure.

Over the centuries, Yue Fei’s reputation grew far beyond his battlefield career. Traditional accounts celebrate his discipline, devotion to his country, and loyalty to the throne, while later literature and popular storytelling turned him into a heroic cultural icon.

He died in 1142, and his story continued to shape Chinese historical memory long afterward. Today he is remembered not only as a military leader, but also as a symbol of steadfastness and moral courage.
