About the author

Born on March 24, 1103, Yue Fei lived during the Southern Song dynasty and became famous for leading Song forces against the Jurchen-led Jin dynasty in northern China. He is widely remembered in Chinese history as a symbol of loyalty and resistance, and his story has remained important far beyond the battlefield.

Although best known as a military commander, Yue Fei is also connected with Chinese literary culture. He has been credited with poetry and calligraphy, and later generations turned his life into stories, drama, and popular legend. That mix of history and myth helped make him one of the most enduring figures in Chinese cultural memory.

Yue Fei died on January 28, 1142, after being executed during a tense political period at court. In the centuries since, he has been honored as a national hero, with temples, statues, and many later works keeping his name alive.
