author
A wonderfully outrageous pseudonym from the world of eighteenth-century satire, attached to a bizarre medical parody about the supposed benefits of farting. Behind the joke, the true author remains uncertain, making this a curious literary mystery as well as a comic relic.
Fart in hando Puff-indorst—also styled Don Fartinando Puff-Indorst—appears as the author of The Benefit of Farting Explain'd, a short satirical work first recorded in 1722. The title presents him as a Spanish professor at the fictional University of Cracow, while its fanciful imprint and exaggerated names signal a deliberate comic performance rather than a trustworthy biography.
The work has sometimes been attributed to Jonathan Swift, but that attribution is disputed. Library records note that Swift himself reportedly attributed it to “one Dobbs a surgeon,” leaving the author’s real identity unresolved. No reliable portrait of this pseudonymous figure has been identified.
