About the author

Wang Fangqing, who died around June 702, was a Chinese statesman active during the Tang dynasty and Wu Zetian’s Zhou dynasty. He was born Wang Lin but was better known by his courtesy name, Fangqing, and later held the noble title Duke Zhen of Shiquan.

According to widely used reference sources, he served in government at a high level and became a chancellor during Wu Zetian’s reign. He is also associated with the distinguished Langya Wang clan, a family long noted in Chinese history for its scholarly and political influence.

For readers today, Wang Fangqing stands out less as a literary celebrity than as a figure from the world of early medieval Chinese court life: educated, well connected, and deeply involved in the machinery of empire.
