Born near Osnabrück in 1794, Friedrich Wilhelm Lyra was a German administrative official, archivist, and popular writer. Reference works describe him as a dialect writer and researcher whose work is closely tied to the Osnabrück region and to Low German literary culture.

Sources on his life note that he took part in the wars against Napoleon and was present at Waterloo before returning to Osnabrück for government service. Alongside that career, he wrote Plattdeutsche Briefe, Erzählungen und Gedichte, a collection known for its use of Westphalian Low German and its interest in sayings, stories, and rural life.

Lyra died in Osnabrück in 1848. Though not widely known outside regional literary history, he remains a notable voice in the preservation of local language and tradition.
