About the author

Born in Kent in 1888, she wrote under the name F. Tennyson Jesse and built an unusually varied career as a novelist, journalist, playwright, and criminology writer. She was also a great-niece of Alfred, Lord Tennyson, but her own reputation came from the range and originality of her work.

She trained first as an artist, then turned to writing and reporting. During the First World War she worked as a war correspondent, and over the years she published fiction, plays, and books about criminal cases. That mix of literary skill and interest in psychology helped give her writing a distinctive edge.

Many readers remember her best for A Pin to See the Peepshow, a dark, penetrating novel inspired by a real murder case. She died in London in 1958, leaving behind work that still stands out for its intelligence, sympathy, and fascination with the hidden motives behind human behavior.
