About the author

Born in London on 27 June 1869, Frederick Richard Cowper Reed studied at Harrow and then Trinity College, Cambridge, where geology and paleontology became his main fields. He later worked for many years in Cambridge as assistant to the Woodwardian Professor of Geology, building a reputation as a patient and exact scholar.

Reed is best remembered for his research on invertebrate fossils, especially trilobites and other ancient marine life. He published on British material as well as fossils from places including South Africa and Thailand, and he also wrote broader geological works such as The Geology of the British Empire and A Handbook to the Geology of Cambridgeshire.

He died in Cambridge on 8 February 1946. Contemporary accounts describe him as a modest, devoted scientist whose long career was closely tied to Cambridge and to the close study of the fossil record.
