About the author

Born in 1860 and active into the first half of the 20th century, Frederick Richard Cowper Reed was an English paleontologist and geologist. He published as F. R. Cowper Reed or F. R. C. Reed, and his research focused mainly on fossils and rock formations, especially in Britain.

Reed is best known for studying invertebrate fossils, with trilobites among the groups most closely linked to his name. He also wrote books intended to make geology more accessible to students and general readers, including works on Cambridgeshire geology and on the geology of the British Empire.

Although not a household name today, Reed belonged to the generation of scholars who helped build paleontology through careful description, classification, and museum-based research. His writing reflects a period when geology was expanding quickly, connecting local fieldwork with a broader picture of Earth's history.
