About the author

Frederick James Camm was an English technical author and magazine editor, born in Windsor on October 6, 1895. He became one of the best-known popularizers of practical technology in Britain, writing for readers who wanted to build, repair, and understand things for themselves.

He is especially associated with the "Practical" family of magazines, including Practical Wireless, Practical Mechanics, Practical Motorist, and Practical Television. Through those publications and his books, he helped generations of enthusiasts get started with radio, electronics, and home workshop projects in a friendly, straightforward way.

Camm died on February 18, 1959. Even so, his name remained closely tied to practical hobby publishing, and many readers continued to remember him as the energetic, encouraging figure behind magazines that made technical subjects feel possible and fun.
