About the author

Born in New York City on December 21, 1854, Frank Gray Griswold was an American financier and writer who became a well-known figure in upper-class New York life during the Gilded Age. He was especially associated with field sports and outdoor pursuits, and much of his writing grew out of those experiences.

Griswold wrote a number of recollective and sporting works, including Sport on Land and Water, The Tarpon, Horses and Hounds, and The Cascapedia Club. His books draw on foxhunting, fishing, travel, and club life, giving readers a firsthand glimpse of the sporting world he loved.

He died on March 30, 1937. Today, his work is remembered less as fiction than as a lively record of a particular American social world, full of anecdote, privilege, and enthusiasm for life outdoors.
