About the author

Born in Juiz de Fora in 1882, Frederico Carlos Hoehne built his scientific career largely through practice and fieldwork rather than formal academic training. He worked at the National Museum in Rio de Janeiro and later took part in botanical expeditions in Brazil’s interior, helping document the country’s plant life.

Hoehne became one of the important early voices for the study and protection of Brazil’s native flora. He wrote extensively, focused much of his research on orchids, and was closely connected with the development of botanical institutions in São Paulo.

He died in 1959 in São Paulo. Today he is remembered not only as a botanist and taxonomist, but also as a pioneer in linking botanical research with nature conservation in Brazil.
