About the author

Born in Sandhurst in 1813 or 1814 and dying in London in 1862, Freeman Gage Delamotte was a British artist, draughtsman, and engraver best known for decorative design and illumination. Museum records connect him with a substantial body of watercolor and ink studies of illuminated initials, borders, and Gothic lettering, showing how deeply he worked in historic ornament.

He is especially remembered for books such as The Book of Ornamental Alphabets, Ancient and Mediaeval, Mediaeval Alphabets and Initials for Illuminators, and A Primer of the Art of Illumination for the Use of Beginners. These works were made for artists, designers, and learners rather than specialists alone, which helps explain why they were reprinted and stayed useful for so long.

Delamotte's surviving work includes both published design manuals and original artworks now held by institutions including The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Taken together, they show an artist who combined careful historical study with a clear teaching instinct, offering Victorian readers a practical way into the art of lettering, ornament, and illumination.
