About the author

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Frederick Frye Rockwell was an American gardening author and editor whose career centered on making horticulture useful and approachable for everyday readers. He wrote many books on subjects including vegetables, pruning, bulbs, roses, lawns, and indoor gardening, and his 1917 book Around the Year in the Garden stood out for organizing garden work week by week.

Rockwell also had a long career in garden journalism. He served as Sunday garden editor of The New York Times from 1933 to 1943, later founded Home Garden Magazine in 1943, and worked with publications such as Flower Grower-Home Garden, Farm Journal, Town Journal, McCall's, and Living for Young Homemakers. He was also active in garden organizations, including helping found the Men's Garden Club of New York.

Much of his work reflected a simple idea: good gardening advice should be practical, encouraging, and easy to use. That straightforward style helped his books remain appealing to readers who wanted reliable guidance rather than grand theory.
