About the author

Born in Hanley, Staffordshire, in March 1841, Frederick Edward Hulme built a career that joined art, teaching, and natural history. He studied art in London and went on to teach at several institutions, later becoming Professor of Freehand and Geometrical Drawing at King's College London in 1886.

Hulme is best remembered for writing and illustrating popular books on plants and design, especially Familiar Wild Flowers, which was published in nine volumes. He also wrote on subjects such as heraldry, symbolism, and ornamental art, bringing a teacher's clarity to a wide range of topics.

What makes his work especially appealing today is the way it combines usefulness with delight. He wrote for curious general readers rather than specialists alone, and his books show how closely Victorian art, nature study, and everyday learning could be connected.
