About the author

Born in Wemeldinge in the Netherlands on December 29, 1884, Foort Cornelis Dominicus wrote under the name F. C. Dominicus. He trained and worked as a teacher of Dutch and French, and became known as a remarkably productive author whose subjects included the Dutch language, Dutch literature, Esperanto, and South Africa.

A formative part of his life was the period he spent in Grahamstown, South Africa, from 1913 to 1920, where he taught languages at St Andrew's College and completed a degree at Rhodes University. That experience fed into later books on South African history and society, including Het huiselik en maatschappelik leven van de Zuid-Afrikaner in de eerste helft der 18de eeuw.

Back in the Netherlands, he continued publishing widely, especially on linguistics and usage. Sources also note that he took strong positions on language purity and on South African political questions, views that are part of the historical record and may strike modern readers as controversial. He died in The Hague on June 9, 1976.
