About the author

Born in Wickford, Rhode Island, on April 28, 1826, Frances Irene Burge Griswold published under the name F. Burge Griswold. She was the daughter of Rev. Lemuel Burge and Elizabeth Frances Shaw, and she grew up in the world of St. Paul's Narragansett Church, a background that shaped the religious and reflective tone found in much of her writing.

Griswold wrote poetry, fiction, and children's books, and she was especially known for works such as The Bishop and Nannette series, The Old Market-Cart, and The Elm Tree Tales. She also turned to local history in Old Wickford: The Venice of America, showing a lasting attachment to her Rhode Island home and its stories.

She died on January 8, 1900. Today, she is remembered as one of the many 19th-century American women writers whose work blended domestic storytelling, moral feeling, and regional memory.
