About the author

Born in Tashkent on November 12, 1874, Evgenii Sigizmundovich Politovskii was trained at the Emperor Nicholas I Naval Engineering School and went on to serve as a naval engineer in the Russian fleet. Contemporary editions of his work describe him as an engineer-constructor attached to the flagship of the Second Pacific Squadron.

Politovskii is remembered for From Libau to Tsushima, a firsthand narrative of Admiral Rojdestvensky’s voyage to the Far East and the events surrounding the Russo-Japanese War. The book stands out because it combines technical knowledge with the close observation of someone living through the strain, confusion, and fatal momentum of the expedition.

He died in 1905 during the campaign he wrote about, which gives the book an added sense of urgency and historical weight. For many readers, his work remains valuable not only as military history, but as a human record of a catastrophic journey at sea.
