1838–1919
A celebrated Victorian soldier and memoirist, he wrote from firsthand experience of war, empire, and military life. His books carry the tone of someone who had seen history up close and wanted to set it down for later readers.

by Evelyn Wood
Best known as Field Marshal Sir Henry Evelyn Wood, he was born in 1838 and became one of Britain's most prominent military figures. He served in major 19th-century conflicts, including the Indian Rebellion and later campaigns in southern Africa and Egypt, and he received the Victoria Cross for bravery early in his career.
Alongside his military service, he was also a writer. His books include memoirs and historical works such as From Midshipman to Field-Marshal and Winnowed Memories, which draw on a long life in the armed forces and offer a personal view of the British Empire at war.
He died in 1919. For readers interested in eyewitness military writing, his work offers both autobiography and a window into how a senior Victorian officer understood his age.
