About the author

Born in Wolverhampton in 1875, Evelyn Underhill became one of the best-known English writers on Christian mysticism in the early 20th century. She studied at King's College for Women in London and went on to write widely about spiritual experience, prayer, and the inner life.

She is especially remembered for Mysticism (1911), a major study that introduced many readers to the history and meaning of mystical thought. Other important works include Practical Mysticism, The Mystic Way, and Worship. Across her writing, she had a gift for making demanding spiritual ideas feel thoughtful, human, and accessible.

Underhill was also active as a retreat leader and spiritual guide, and she became an important voice in Anglican spirituality. She died in London in 1941, but her work continues to be read by people interested in contemplation, prayer, and the search for a deeper life.
