Evelyn March Phillipps

Born in 1853, Evelyn March Phillipps was an English writer and art historian whose work centered on Italian Renaissance art. She wrote with a clear, accessible style that aimed to introduce important painters and artistic traditions to a wider audience.

Her best-known books include Pintoricchio and The Venetian School of Painting, both of which remained of interest long enough to be preserved and reissued in digital libraries. Rather than writing only for specialists, she presented art history as something vivid and readable, blending careful research with a strong sense of story.

Phillipps died in 1915. Though not as widely known today as some later scholars, her work still offers a window into how Renaissance art was interpreted and shared with English-speaking readers in her time.
