About the author

Born in 1873 and active as a barrister and advocate, he wrote mainly on copyright and insurance law. Contemporary and library records connect him with the Inner Temple and the Faculty of Advocates, and his books show a talent for turning difficult legal questions into usable reference works.

His best-known titles include A Treatise upon the Law of Copyright in the United Kingdom and the Dominions of the Crown, and in the United States of America, as well as later works on the Copyright Act of 1911 and on insurance law. Those books gave him a lasting place in legal publishing, especially for readers interested in how authors' rights and commercial risk were handled in the early 20th century.

He died in 1955. Although he is not widely remembered outside specialist legal circles today, his writing remained influential enough that his name stayed attached to standard legal texts, most notably MacGillivray on Insurance Law.
