About the author

Born in 1824, Eustace Clare Grenville Murray was a British diplomat, journalist, and author. He entered the diplomatic service while still a young man and served in several European posts, experiences that later fed directly into his writing.

Murray also worked as a newspaper correspondent, and his blend of official service and journalism made his career unusually eventful. After leaving diplomacy, he devoted more of his energy to writing, producing books that ranged across travel, politics, society, and fiction.

He died in 1881. Although he is not as widely known now as some of his contemporaries, his work offers a useful window into nineteenth-century Europe and the perspectives of a well-connected Victorian observer.
