Eustace Clare Grenville Murray

1824–1881

A globe-trotting Victorian journalist and diplomat, he turned years in European and Ottoman postings into sharp travel writing, satire, and lively sketches of society. Writing under names like "The Roving Englishman," he brought an observant, sometimes mischievous eye to the world around him.

About the author

Born in 1824, he was an English journalist and writer who also spent many years in the diplomatic service. Sources agree that he studied at Oxford, entered the Inner Temple, and then joined the British diplomatic world with the backing of Lord Palmerston, serving in places including Vienna, Hanover, Constantinople, and Odessa.

Alongside that official career, he built a reputation as a prolific man of letters. He wrote for newspapers and magazines, often under pseudonyms including The Roving Englishman, and published travel writing, social commentary, satire, and fiction drawn from his wide experience abroad.

After leaving diplomacy, he continued writing and editing in England and France. He died in 1881, and later reference works remembered him chiefly as a lively Victorian journalist whose work connected politics, travel, and social observation.
