About the author

Born on November 3, 1841, in Denmark, Eugenius Warming became one of the key early figures in ecology. He is widely remembered for helping establish plant ecology as a scientific field and for writing an important early textbook on the subject in the 1890s.

Warming studied how plants live in relation to their environment — looking at climate, soil, water, and competition rather than treating species as isolated specimens. That approach helped shift botany toward the study of whole plant communities and the ways plants adapt to different habitats.

He died on April 2, 1924, but his influence has lasted far beyond his own time. Today he is often described as one of the founders of ecology because his research and teaching helped define what the field would become.
