About the author

Born on the Danish island of Mandø in 1841, Johannes Eugenius Bülow Warming became one of the key figures in early ecology. He studied at the University of Copenhagen and later built an academic career in botany, teaching in Stockholm and Copenhagen.

Part of what made his work stand out was his close attention to how plants actually live in the world around them. Time spent in Brazil early in his career broadened his scientific outlook, and his research went beyond naming species to asking how vegetation responds to heat, drought, water, and competition.

Warming is widely remembered as a founder of plant ecology. His 1895 book on ecological plant geography helped shape the field for later generations, and his ideas influenced both European and American scientists. He died in Copenhagen in 1924, leaving behind a lasting way of thinking about the relationship between plants and their environment.
